Note Frances Mary's application at Sydney on 22/3/1831 for banns to marry Thomas Spicer - this read "Fanny Callaghan, 18, spinster, Sovereign 1829, bond, service of M Ryan who has consented".

Edward's death is recorded as being as a result of the "accidental overturning of a cart". After an inquest held the day of his death, Edward was buried in the Cawdor cemetery.
MATTHEW SLACK
Matthew arrived in the Australian State of New South Wales on 8/5/1913 on the Omrah. He was buried 9/11/1966 in Grave 398, Section R, Independant Cemetery, Rookwood
KATHERINE WILSON
Katherine arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 6/12/1885 on the Florida
GEORGE MOBBERLEY
George arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 15/8/1879 on the Northbrook
CHARLES MOBBERLEY
Charles arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 15/8/1879 on the Northbrook. Charles Mobberley's death certificate incorrectly records his father's name as JOSEPH. He was aged 28 when he married, and was then described as a fireman (he worked as a fire attendant at the Excelsior Brickworks at Croydon). He was described as a gardener on his death certificate. Charles arrived Sydney as an assisted migrant on the Northbrook 15/8/1879 when he was described as a 41 year old labourer. He was buried in the Methodist section of Rookwood cemetery.
PHOEBE LEES
Phoebe arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 15/8/1879 on the Northbrook. Note that Phoebe Lees' birth and marriage were both registered as "Phebe", though she was named as Phoebe on the birth certificate of her son George and on her death certificate. She arrived Sydney 15/8/1879 as an assisted migrant on the Northbrook. Phoebe died aged 82 on 18/8/1925 at the home of her daughter, Mary Ann, at Ponsonby, Auckland NZ and was buried 19/8/1925 in the Methodist section, Hillsborough cemetery, Auckland NZ. Her death certificate details are as follows:
-
born: 1843 STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND
-
married: aged 19
-
spouse: CHARLES MOBBERLEY
-
issue living: male aged 59, female aged 62
-
46 years residence in NZ
-
widow
-
died: 18/8/1925
-
place: 1 Clyde St., PONSONBY, AUCKLAND, NZ
-
buried: 19/8/1925 Methodist Section, HILLSBOROUGH, AUCKLAND
Her death notice reads "On 18 Aug, at the residence of her daughter Mrs Butler, 1 Clyde St., PONSONBY, PHOEBE, relict of CHARLES MOBBERLEY, aged 82". It seems that her son CHARLES (who it is understood was a "meat dresser" and went to the USA) was dead. It seems that her daughter HARRIET was also dead. The age would be correct for our PHEBE, and the time in NZ would be correct for time in Australia and NZ. We now know that CHARLES and PHEBE MOBBERLEY had an elder daughter, MARY ANN MOBBERLEY, and that MARY ANN MOBBERLEY married SYDNEY BUTLER in NSW in 1884. We know that PHEBE's husband, CHARLES, died 7/10/1894 and it seems likely she then went to NZ to live with MARY ANN and SYDNEY. Kelvin McCallum says that he recalls that there was a MOBBERLEY connection with NZ. He recalls an "Uncle Fred" about his mother's age who visited from NZ in the 1940s. Perhaps this was a grandson of MARY ANN and second cousin of Kelvin's mother. Put together, the above seems adequate circumstantial evidence that the PHOEBE MOBBERLEY who died in NZ on 18/8/1925 was PHEBE MOBBERLEY (née LEES)

Notes: Elizabeth Arnold arrived Sydney 25/2/1840 on the Earl Grey as a bounty immigrant, and was then described as a cook. She was buried 18/2/1890 at Botany cemetery. It appears that at the time of her death she was in Young with her daughter, Mrs Anna Jane Starr. ELIZABETH SAXBY (née ARNOLD) is described in F A Lascombe's publication The History of Botany 1788-1963 as "the first midwife" of Botany
WILLIAM HAMBLY
William arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 21/12/1858 on the Forest Monarch. Notes: William Hambly arrived in NSW 21/12/1858 on the Forest Monarch and was described as a gardener. William was buried 26/2/1918 at Botany cemetery. The following is a quotation from page 10 of F A Lascombe's publication "The History of Botany 1788-1963": "Lord's grant was partly subdivided and a piece was purchased by William Hambly, the founder of a well known Botany family. Born in Cornwall in 1823, Hambly followed local tradition by working in the mines and then on the land. He emigrated to NSW in 1853 and purchased 11 acres on which he established a market garden. Like Lord he was the father of a large family, having 10 children. Hambly's sons maintained an interest in market gardening and other enterprises. Amos opened a butchery at Botany while another son, Frank, later served two terms (1898-99) as Mayor of the municipality."

ADAM BOND
Adam, also known as ADAM THOMAS SEYMOUR BOND, arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 6/12/1829 on the Sarah. Notes: Though known in later life as Adam Thomas Seymour Bond, he was baptised on 18/12/1810 at Clavering simply as Adam Bond, in which name he arrived in the colony in 1829. The names "Thomas Seymour" come from the death certificate of his son, John Charles Prior Bond. His gravestone names him as Adam Thomas Bond. The death certificate of Adam Bond also raises problems in that it names Ann Parrott as the first wife. However, Adam Bond "married" Mary Ann Prior first. As Adam Thomas Bond, he married Mrs Ann Parrott (née Martin but in fact married under the name of Ann Martin) on 16/4/1851 at Sydney. Adam Thomas was described at that time as a bachelor, which seems to indicate that he had not formally married Mary Ann Prior; that rather she was a common law wife. Ann died 17/7/1884 aged 70. Adam arrived in the colony 6/12/1829 as a convict on the Sarah. The convict indent for the Sarah records him as a 17 year old uneducated protestant, born in Essex, who was convicted at Chelmsford assizes on 9/3/1829 of poaching firearms at Wenden Lofts, Essex, on 18/12/1828, and sentenced to be transported for 7 years. He was charged with 27 others, including a William Bond, and was 17 at the time. There seems no doubt that there was some sort of relationship between Adam Bond and William Bond (the first fleet baker who arrived on the Charlotte aged about 50 and who died 22/9/1839 aged "110 years") as we understand William established Bond Farm and Adam subsequently took it over. Adam Thomas (Seymour) Bond is buried at St Savior's Church of England graveyard at Belmore with his second wife, Ann Bond (formerly Mrs Parrott née Martin).
JOHN DORROUGH
John arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 13/2/1842 on the Broom
MARGARET ELLIOTT

EDWIN FRANCIS
Edwin appears to have been the E Francis who arrived Sydney 10/4/1853 on the the Nihalennia in company with a William Francis. This would fit in with his arrival in Port Phillip, Melbourne, on the Clara Symes on 9/2/1953. In Melbourne he heard that his sister Ann, and their cousin Martha Francis, had arrived in Sydney, whence he travelled. His death certificate gives his occupation as a retired boot manufacturer, place of birth as Bath, Somerset, UK and says he was 67 years in NSW. He was buried at the Methodist section of Rookwood cemetery. Edwin's death certificate also names his mother as "Helen" but this is not given much credibility; it is possibly a corruption of "Allen", his mothers maiden surname.
MATTHEW DORROUGH
Matthew arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 13/2/1842 on the Broom. Notes: Matthew Dorrough arrived Sydney 13/2/1842 on the Broom. His death certificate incorrectly records his mother's name as Matilda Donagh. Matthew was buried 19/8/1897 at the North Lismore cemetery.
MARTHA BOGLE
Martha arrived in the colony of New South Wales on 13/2/1842 on the Broom. Notes: Martha Bogle arrived Sydney 13/2/1842 on the Broom. She was buried 6/6/1869 at East Kangaloon.

ANN LIDDY
ANN SUTTON (née LIDDY) died 1/3/1891 and is buried at Rookwood with her husband HENRY in the old Church of England section, ref 437 EE.. On her death certificate her name is recorded as ANNE SUTTON, and her father as (unknown forename) surname Lydiard.
It is noted that Ann's surname from the 1828 census and from her marriage certificate is Liddy. Ann is recorded in the 1828 census as "born in the colony" in 1816, a servant of Hannibal McArthur and then resident at Vineyard Cottage, Parramatta (note that her husband, Henry Sutton, was assigned to Hannibal McArthur). There are no Liddy's in the 1828 census other than Ann herself, and no Lydiards. Her place of birth is recorded on her death certificate as "County Clare, Ireland" and it is stated that she was 70 years in New South Wales, though of course the 1828 census records her as born in the colony. Note that 70 years would put her arrival at about 1821. ANN was placed into the orphan school 28/2/1828, and was taken out seven and a half months later by HANNIBAL McARTHUR on 14/10/1828. Some members of the family insist that ANN was initially adopted as a baby by John McArthur and that HENRY SUTTON was John McArthur's bootmaker before he was assigned to Hannibal McArthur. It is perhaps relevant that according to the Pioneer Register that ANN LIDDY married GEORGE COLLESS in about 1879. The chidren of ANN and HENRY SUTTON include SARAH SUTTON (died 1856). We find no other reference to SARAH, but find a COLIN SUTTON, born to ANN and HENRY in 1853.

JAMES GORMAN
James was buried in the Catholic cemetery, Parish of St James. His place of abode at the time of his death was Bankstown.
ISABELLA BROWNE
Isabella's death certificate suggests that she first married aged 17, which would have meant about 1832 - this is incorrect in that she married first (to James Gorman) in 1840. It is in fact understood that she bore a number of illegitimate children to James Gorman from about 1833 and subsequently covered up that fact by claiming a young marriage. This is supported by her death certificate recording an age of 34 at the time of her second marriage in 1851, 11 years after she married James Gorman "aged 17". Her death certificate records 52 years in NSW which suggests an arrival date of about 1831. Isabella was described as a widow and "of Bankstown" when she married George Begnell in 1851. Strangely, her funeral notice in The Sydney Morning Herald is in the name of Gorman, and records her being the widow of the late James Gorman rather than naming her second husband, George Begnell. She was buried as Isabella Begnell in grave 225, section 6, Catholic section of Rookwood cemetery.

CHARLES MALCOLM MOBBERLEY
CHARLES MALCOLM MOBBERLEY was variously known as "Charlie" and "Malc". He attended South Strathfield Public School and Ashfield Junior Technical School, leaving the latter aged 13. It being the depression, any income he could obtain was important to the family, and he had a number of short term jobs before obtaining employment as a cleaner at the depot of a private bus company at Strathfield. The bus company was taken over by the state transport service in 1937, and this was the start of a long career that was only interrupted by army service during the Second World War. Charles Malcolm's transport department service saw him rise from cleaner, via bus conductor and bus driver, to being 1st Class Depot Inspector at the Randwick bus depot at the time of his retirement on 22/6/1978. Related to his career, he was President of the Enfield Branch of the Transport Bus Worker's Institute 1963 to 1969, and president (and later Secretary) of the Branch's fishing club 1959-69. After his retirement he became very actively involved in the Retired Bus and Tram Employees Social Club, and was the outings convenor for some years. On another plane, he was deacon of the Strathfield Homebush Baptist Church for a number of years, was a keen fisherman and, for a time, an enthusiastic golfer. He was also a keen bird keeper and breeder. He claimed to be the joint holder of a longstanding sporting record - about 1950 he (together with one Bruce Hall) shared the record highest opening partnership of 255 in the Western Suburbs District Cricket Union's C Grade Churches Competition. His contribution to the partnership was 75. Charles Malcolm Mobberley was cremated and his ashes repose in a memorial wall at St Thomas Church of England graveyard, Enfield.
