A report of the Coroner's inquest into the drowning of AMOS RICHARD SAXBY in the Sydney Morning Herald of 30/12/1873 reads as follows:

"PARRAMATTA (from our correspondent) INQUEST The District Coroner, Mr I E Bowden, held an inquest at Liverpool, on Saturday last, the 27th instant, on the body of a man named Amos Richard Saxby, who was accidentally drowned on the previous day. The following evidence was taken:- Charles Stratford deposed that deceased resided at Botany, was a florist, and was 27 years of age; witness last saw him alive on Friday, between 5 and 6 o'clock, p.m., and was in his company about a mile below the dam on George's River; deceased stripped to bathe, and witness saw him jump off the bank into the water, and disappear; deceased rose again, and stood for some minutes by the bank; he then started to swim across the river, and when about three parts of the way across he seemed to make a stop, turn upon his back, and splash in the water; deceased did not cry for help, and witness thought he was playing in the water; witness saw him go under the water once or twice, and came to the conclusion that deceased was exhausted, and knowing that there was a boat about half a mile down the river witness at once hailed for it, and, being unable to swim himself, he asked Samuel Thilthorp to loosen a boat, which was chained a short distance up the river; deceased was still struggling in the water; Thilthorp could not loosen the boat, but one came up the river with three boys in it; deceased had disappeared under the water for five minutes before the boat got in the spot; witness got in the boat with the boys, and endeavoured to find the body without success; Thilthorp went to get further assistance; the body was afterwards found in witness's presence by a young man named George Arundel; Thilthorp had previously swum across the river; Thilthorp and deceased went into the water together; the river was about 60 yards across, and the water was about 8 feet deep where deceased sank; the body was discovered about three-quarters of an hour after deceased sank; deceased had previously told witness that he could swim well, and witness had no suspicion that deceased was in danger for some time; deceased had left a wife and two children; his wife had told witness that the deceased was subject to a sort of spasm in the chest, which would temporarily stop his breathing; deceased was perfectly sober; Thilthorp was in the water by the bank, and just as witness noticed deceased struggling he called out that deceased was drowning; Thilthorp was quite exhausted from swimming across previously, and was not in a condition to render assistance to deceased. Another witness - Samuel Thilthorp - was examined but his evidence corroberated that of the previous witness. Dr Strong deposed that there were no signs of violence on the body of deceased, which presented the usual appearances of drowning, and was of opinion that the death of the deceased was caused by suffocation from drowning. The jury returned a verdict to that effect."

JOSEPH HENRY WILSON

It is understood that Joseph Henry was engaged to be married, but the engagement was terminated when he had an epileptic fit in the presence of his fiancee. He subsequently got Susan Applegate, the scullerymaid in the Wilson household, pregnant, and married her. For this, according to family legend, he was disinherited by his parents.

We have a copy of a letter written by Joseph Henry to someone who was apparently a sister of his wife, Susan. We only know of two half sisters of Susan, namely Martha and Sarah. Martha is mentioned in the letter as sending her love, and "Sarah Bird" is mentioned on James and Susan's wedding certificate as a witness - though it is just possible that Susan's mother still called herself Sarah Bird. The letter could therefore possibly be addressed to Sarah (married name unknown), but possibly to some other sister. The letter reads as follows:

Bridge Tavern, Wensum Street
Norwich 30th May 1860

My dear Sister,

As I must now reckon you amongst my new relations, though I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing you, I have the happiness to inform you that Susan has at last relieved us of our anxiety respecting her and has presented me with a very fine little daughter whom we have named Lucy in compliment of a very dear old Aunt of mine with that name. The event took place very comfortably last Friday and I should as I promised Susan, have immediately acquainted you with the circumstance but I am sorry to say that I have not been with myself during the week which has prevented me from attending to my epistolary duties.

Susan and little Lucy I am happy to say get on exceedingly well and though perhaps it might have occasioned a more general satisfaction had the sex been different I do not for my part see anything to find fault with. Her hair and eyes are the colour of mine and altogether she takes reasonably enough after me to satisfy anyone. Your mother has been and is still with Susan which has made matters comfortable and Grandfather says he shall have her portrait taken as soon as he can get her out of doors.

I am very glad to find such a favourable change in the weather as has lately taken place for if Susan continues to progress as she has done it will not be long before she will be able to avail herself of it.

It is a very responsible position that of a parent and it is with rather curious feelings that a man for the first time undertakes such a relationship. but poor girl! I trust through God's blessing I may be able to do her justice both as regards the things of this World and the World to come.

Susan, your Mother and Martha desire me to unite their dearest love, joining in which I remain

Yours sincerely
J H Wilson

Joseph Henry is understood to have had an army commission at some stage, and done surveying in India. He is also understood to have visited Australia with the army.

Joseph Henry died at the Thorpe Lunatic Asylum, which is located just 2 miles from Norwich and which still exists. At the time he died it was quite new and was considered to be a most modern establishment, being "light and airy". The establishment took in voluntary patients on a weekly basis at 10/- a week. They were proud of their "minimal restraint" of patients, who were apparently fairly free to get about.
