THE PRIVATE AND UNPUBLISHED WEBSITE
"FROM A DISTANT FIELD, THE LIVING EDITION"

The website From a Distant Field, the Living Edition on the Internet, the central repository of details of all known descendants of the New South Wales pioneers EDWARD and ELIZABETH FIELD that Colin Field has gathered and holds for the family, was first posted to the World Wide Web on 22 December 1997. It was discontinued on 20 April 2005. There was only one reason for this discontinuation - concern that the open access that it provided to genealogical details of living descendants could jeopardise the interests of individuals.

This current website From a Distant Field, the Early Generations addresses this concern, essentially by limiting dates and places to those whose interests are beyond being compromised. It is a compromise that balances off ready access to the family's genealogical record against what are basically privacy concerns.

Colin Field has "mostly given up" doing family history/genealogy. However all he ever learnt about the family is recorded in his private and unpublished website From a Distant Field, the Living Edition. Because of the value and importance of this material to the family and other researchers, Colin makes it available in a manner that can reasonably be expected to satisfy concerns by restricting access to people who commit to licence conditions around how it is used and distributed. It is only by imposing these conditions that he feels able to maintain this important work and continue to make it accessible.

AND THE LICENCE CONDITIONS THAT APPLY

The licence conditions applying to receiving a copy of the installation program for the private and unpublished website "From a Distant Field, the Living Edition", or any of the individual files of which it is comprised, are designed to adequately protect the privacy of those still living whose genealogical details are included. These licence conditions are:

  1. You are licenced to install the website on a computer that you control and to use it for family history purposes. You may not, however, provide a copy to any other person or allow any other person to take a copy.
  2. You must not make it accessible on the Internet or on a network.
  3. You must not publish any information on any living person that you have sourced from the website unless you have obtained that person's prior agreement.
  4. You must not use any information on any living person that you obtain from the website to that person's disadvantage or embarrassment or for commercial purposes.
  5. You may permit other persons to view or have access to the website you have installed on your computer provided you have informed such person of the sensitivity of the data it contains and taken all reasonable measures to ensure that they are aware of and comply with conditions 2, 3 and 4 above.
